New stretch goal: Jimmy Palmiotti interview!
about 8 years ago – Fri, Apr 22, 2016 at 07:18:45 AM

Hello, fabulous Kickstarter Secrets backers! Thank you so much! You did it again -- last night you pushed us over our second stretch goal and now the book will include an interview with Hope Nicholson of Secret Loves of Geek Girls fame!

Now I'm thrilled to announce the third stretch goal -- if we hit $5000, I'll interview the legendary Jimmy Palmiotti, writer of Harley Quinn and Jonah Hex and a comics Kickstarter pioneer with nine big campaigns!

Jimmy Palmiotti has worked in comics for over a quarter century on books like the Punisher, Ash, Painkiller Jane, and most recently the breakout Harley Quinn books for DC. He's also made crowdfunded graphic novels an ongoing part of his business, starting with Queen Crab in 2011. I've been on crowdfunding panels with Jimmy and he always has great information and stories to share -- and he always tells it like it is. I'm eager to talk with Jimmy about what it takes to run nine Kickstarters in six years and how to build a following to help sustain not just a single project but an entire career.

We're already almost a quarter of the way to hitting this stretch goal. Please do keep spreading the word! Here's that handy link again:

Thank you so much and have a fantastic weekend!

Second stretch goal: Interview with Hope Nicholson, "Secret Loves of Geek Girls"!
about 8 years ago – Wed, Apr 20, 2016 at 04:16:33 PM

Hello, you amazing Kickstarter Secrets backers!

You're blowing my mind. You cooked past our first stretch goal in a day, and now the book will include interviews with Amy Chu (writer of Girls Night Out) and Drew Westphal (logistical coordinator of the Code Monkey Save World campaign)! And now here's our next stretch goal:

If we hit $4000, I'll interview Hope Nicholson of Secret Loves of Geek Girls fame!

Hope Nicholson is the owner of the Winnepeg comics publisher Bedside Press and has funded four projects through Kickstarter, including two reprint books of Canadian comics classics and The Secret Loves of Geek Girls, an all-female anthology of stories about love, romance, and sex. I've already been talking with Hope and she some great insights about the importance of running a Kickstarter campaign like a business and has some very specific and incredibly useful tips specific to publishing and shipping from Canada.

I'm hugely excited about these interviews, y'all. One of the great things about writing a how-to book is learning what you don't know -- I'm going to learn a huge amount from these interviews and share it all with you!

Please do feel free to share the word with your friends to help bump us up and make these interviews happen. After Hope, we have Jimmy Palmiotti and C. Spike Trotman lined up. These are all legends in comics Kickstarter publishing, and I can't wait to talk with them in depth. Here's that link again:

Thank you SO MUCH!

Thank you so much! And here's the first stretch goal!

Dear wonderful Kickstarter Secrets backers!

You're amazing. We hit our goal of $2000 today -- just seven hours into the campaign! Thank you so much! I'm writing this book! And now we have the chance to make it even more awesome!

I'm thrilled to announce that our stretch goals will feature special interviews with five amazing creators with tremendous Kickstarter experiences -- Amy Chu, Drew Westphal, Jimmy Palmiotti, Hope Nicholson, and C. Spike Trotman! If we hit our targets, these interviews will be incorporated into the final book to shed much more light on certain subjects that I can't wait to learn more about myself. Without further ado, here's the first of the stretch goals:

If we reach $3000, I'll interview AMY CHU and DREW WESTPHAL!

Amy Chu funded her two GIRLS NIGHT OUT comics anthologies through Kickstarter. When people ask me how to break in to comics, I point to Amy, who started as an unknown a few years ago, built her skills and reputation step by step, and now is working on projects like POISON IVY for DC and DEADPOOL and ANT-MAN for Marvel. I can't wait to talk to her about how she built the network to fund her Kickstarters and what kind of advice she has for creators at the start of their careers.

Drew Westphal is the logistical genius who kept the wheels on the bus during the CODE MONKEY SAVE WORLD Kickstarter, coordinating the production of special rewards, finding and managing vendors, and creating the digital infrastructure for organizing addresses, generating mailing lists, and distributing digital rewards. He'll shed light on all of the nuts and bolts of running a campaign and probably remind me of a bunch of my mistakes. ;-) Drew works with with a number of artists on custom direct-to-fan sales, customer service, fulfillment and logistics. He is also a partner in the annual JoCo Cruise, which sets sail on March 4, 2017 out of San Diego, CA.

Right now we're at $2471. Just over $500 more and we'll be able to add Amy and Drew to the book. Please do feel free to share the Kickstarter with your friends and help bump us up to the next level! Here's the direct link again:
